my sister md The Ki-45 arose from a March 1937 IJA specification for a twin-engined heavy fighter, in part inspired by Germany’s Messerschmitt Bf110 and Junkers Ju88 designs. While three firms, Mitsubishi, Kawasaki, and Nakajima initially submitted designs, more pressing contracts soon took Mitsubishi and Nakajima out of the running. Nonetheless, the Ki-45's greatest strength proved to be its bomber intercepting capabilities. Heavily armed with a 37 mm cannon, the Ki-45 could shred heavy bombers with ease. By mid 1944, the need for a bomber destroyer to defend the Japanese mainland against B-29 raids was ever present.

The Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu (屠龍, "Dragon Slayer") was a two-seat, twin-engine fighter used by the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II. The army gave it the designation " Type 2 Two-Seat Fighter "; the Allied reporting name was " Nick ".

History The Kawasaki Ki-45 was the first attempt by Japanese manufacturers to provide the JAAF with a modern twin-engine fighter. The original specification was issued to Nakajima, Mitsubishi, and Kawasaki in 1937, but the first two soon withdrew from the project, Kawasaki continued into 1939 with the completion of the Ki-45 prototype.

Takada's Ki-45 hit the water about 30' from the Sub Chaser No. 699. The wreckage tumbled into its midship, burying its engine into the wooden hull. 16 of the crew were thrown into the sea, and many suffered burns.

The Ki-45 is a twin engine heavy fighter and was used for ground attack and as an interceptor. The first Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu (dragon killer) prototype flew in 1939, a cantilever mid-wing monoplane with retractable tailwheel landing gear. A slender fuselage provided enclosed accommodation for two in tandem.

The Ki 45 was Japan’s first twin-engine fighter and its most successful night fighter. It also served capably in a variety of missions, including ground attack, antishipping, and kamikaze. The Kawasaki Ki-45 required more time to develop and place in service than almost every other Japanese warplane of World War II. The Ki-45 Toryu (meaning "Dragon Killer" or "Dragon Slayer" and nicknamed "Nick" by the Allies) would go on to find success at many differing levels, but more importantly, it would provide the Imperial Army with the much needed Ki-45 KAIc dedicated night-fighter platform (detailed elsewhere on this site), and challenge the night time bombing campaign of the Allies over control of the Pacific Theater. The Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu (屠龍, "Dragon Slayer") was a two-seat, twin-engine fighter used by the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II. The army gave it the designation "Type 2 Two-Seat Fighter"; the Allied reporting name was "Nick".
